Infrared Coagulation - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the procedure Painful?

A: Medical studies have shown that Infrared Coagulation treatment causes much less discomfort than any other non-surgical hemorrhoid treatment and is generally pain-free. With IRC your hemorrhoid treatment can take place during a regular office visit.

Q: How Many IRC Treatments will I need, and how long is the Infrared coagulation procedure?

A: Our physicians evaluate each patient on a case-by-case basis. Your physician will determine how many visits are required based on your confidential examination. On average, patients require a short series of visits at weekly intervals. Depending on the severity of the hemorrhoids, an IRC treatment generally lasts about ten minutes.

Q: Can I be treated with infrared coagulation if I am taking medications?

A: Yes, we are able to treat most patients with IRC who are taking medications. It is very important that you inform your doctor of any medications you are currently taking.

Q: Is there any special preperation before or after the IRC treatment?

A: The in-office Infrared Coagulation procedure requires no special fasting, medications or preparation prior to treatment. You can continue with your usual activities, even on the day of the IRC treatment. Most of our patients go back to work the same day following their hemorrhoid treatment.

Q: Will I be able to have normal bowel movements during the IRC process?

A: Yes, Infrared Coagulation hemorrhoid treatment produces no disruption to your daily schedule or lifestyle.

Q: Why have I never heard of Infrared Coagulation before?

A: Infrared Coagulation has been around for over 15 years. Hemorrhoid Relief Centers are the only clinics in the country that specialize in hemorrhoid treatment using Infrared Coagulation.

Q: What is the success rate of Infrared Coagulation?

A: According to a study published in May 2000 European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, 92% of patients receiving the Infrared Coagulation hemorrhoid treatment reported they were symptom-free following IRC therapy.

Q: How long is the IRC procedure?

A: If you are a new patient, allow 45 minutes for the full Infrared Coagulation consultation, examination, and hemorrhoid treatment. Follow up treatments take roughly 10 minutes per visit.

Q: Am I a candidate for IRC?

A: When you come into our office, the doctor performs a detailed hemorrhoid examination. This is the only way to determine whether or not you are a candidate for Infrared Coagulation. Most people with hemorrhoids will respond to IRC, but this can only be confirmed by a medical evaluation.
